Gujarat Titans – IPL 2022: Can Gujarat Titans nail the IPL with a normal squad? Initially, they completely ignored their batting department in the auction. Titans depend on uncapped batsmen like Abhinav Manohar to perform in every match.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) continues with the introduction of two new franchises. Uttar Pradesh-based Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans are the latest to enter the line. IPL will be played with ten teams for the first time since 2011. Also, ten teams will be divided into two groups as each team will play 14 matches each.
Ipl 2022: Gujarat Titans Banking On Bowling Strength In Their Maiden Voyage
Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans did wonders in the draft picks ahead of the mega-auction. The franchise secured Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan for Rs 38 crore; Considering the experience these players bring to the table, they are exceptional buys. When he made his debut for Mumbai Indians in 2015, Hardik Pandya’s charming personality caught the eye of many. Since then, Hardik has appeared in four IPL finals and won the trophy on all occasions. The 28-year-old has scored 1,476 runs with 42 wickets in his career.
Rashid Khan, who has taken more than 400 T20 wickets, will wear the color blue this season. The Afghanistan spinner was also part of Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier. He has so far taken 93 IPL wickets with an economy rate of 6.33. The 23-year-old holds the record for taking 96 scalps in 2018, the record for most T20 wickets by a bowler in a calendar year. Additionally, Rashid is the fastest bowler to complete 100 T20I wickets. Titans have drafted Rashid for 15 crores and expect him to do some remarkable things this season.
After Gautam Gambhir vacated the opening spot, Shubman Gill was the mainstay of Kolkata Knight Riders. The 22-year-old has scored 1,417 runs in 58 matches with 10 fifties. Last season, the opener was the highest run-scorer for Kolkata with 478 runs. Despite this, the Titans have failed to form a strong team this season. If we take Hardik, Shubman and Rashid out of the equation, the Titans look like a piece of jungle.
Initially, they completely ignored their batting department in the auction. A tournament like IPL requires a strong and comprehensive batting lineup. Titans depend on uncapped batsmen like Abhinav Manohar to perform in every match. The 27-year-old made his first-class T20 debut for Karnataka in the opening quarter-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2021. Abhinav was the star-performer in that match scoring an unbeaten 70 runs. However, the right-handed batsman has experienced only four matches in domestic T20Is. The lack of experience of an uncapped batter could have dire consequences for the Titans. Mainly, when the Titans expect him to be third down.

Fortunately, they put money into Matthew Wade and David Miller. Wade has scored 2,365 T20 runs at an average of 30.3. The Australian wicketkeeper also captains the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. The 34-year-old has been instrumental in Australia’s quest for their first T20 World Cup in 2021. Known for his explosive batting, Miller could only score 240 runs off 196 balls last year. The 32-year-old played with a strike rate of 122.4 last year, his lowest since 2016. Miller has been out of form last year with just two fifties in eleven innings. However, the South African batsman may hit the ball into the bleachers despite not being in the best form.
Inexperienced Rahmanullah Gurbaz also replaces Jason Roy, who dropped out due to bubble fatigue. The 20-year-old could score just 36 runs in five innings playing for Afghanistan. Wriddhiman Saha will open the innings in Jason’s absence.
Additionally, they have eased the pressure on Indian all-rounders like Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tewatia. Vijay is expected to bat at number four, which again is not his natural batting position. The 31-year-old has scored 712 runs in the IPL and claimed just nine scalps. After hitting five sixes in Sheldon Cottrell’s over, Tewatia also disappeared and did just fine. The right-handed legbreak bowler has managed to take only 32 wickets in 48 matches. As they don’t have many backup options, Gujarat will give them a perfect chance. It will be interesting to see how the Titans approach these players on the field.
On the bright side, the Titans have got an acceptable bowling attack. Mohammad Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Alzari Joseph will lead the fast team. Shami and Ferguson can be a lethal pair in the powerplay and death overs. The New Zealand fast bowler can bowl up to 150kmph and holds the record for the eighth fastest bowling (153.84kmph) in IPL history. The 30-year-old has taken 24 wickets in 22 IPL matches. Similarly, Shami can handle the new bowlers well and bowl yorkers in the death overs. The 31-year-old was the highest wicket-taker for Punjab Kings in 2021 with 19 wickets in 14 matches. Antiguan bowler Alzari can also create healthy movement between the wickets of Mumbai and Pune.

Rashid Khan and Jayant Yadav will lead the spin department. Emphasis will also be placed on youngsters like Sai Kishore, Darshan Nalkande and Noor Ahmed. Nalkande is a lean fast bowler who plays for Vidarbha in domestic cricket. The 23-year-old has taken 43 wickets in just 22 matches playing domestic cricket. Tamil Nadu’s off-spinner Sai Kishore also bowls with an economy of 5.46. The 25-year-old has taken 43 wickets in 38 matches. Left-handed Chinaman Noor Ahmed recently represented Afghanistan in the U-19 World Cup. Noor took ten wickets in six matches to take Afghanistan to their first ever ICC semi-final.
The Titans are set to make their debut in the Rich-Cash League. Gujarat may not be leading the way in winning trophies, but neither was Rajasthan in 2008 or Kolkata in 2012. We all have seen what an underdog can do in IPL. The 15th edition of the IPL will begin on March 26 with the first match to be played between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.
